    Bafq Protected Area




    Introduction: Having an area of over 88,500 ha, it is located in Yazd Province in eastern Iran. The area is mountainous with sparse plains and rolling hills and has an estimated 4 to 6 cheetahs inhabiting the area. Its climate is considered extra-arid and arid, with a mean annual temperature of 16°C and mean annual precipitation of 70mm. Its altitude ranges from 1,060 to 2,860m. The main water supplies come from springs, wells, air pumps and small dams and the area has a rich vegetation cover.



    Plant species:
    The main plant species include juniper (Juniperus excelsa), wild pistachio (Pistacia atlantica), mountain almond (Amygdalus scoparia), tamarisk (Tamarisk sp.), saxaul (Haloxylon sp.), bean caper (Zygophyllum fabago), soda plant (Siedlitzia rosmarinus), poppy mallow (Calligonum sp.), wormwood (Artemisia aucheri) and camel’s thorn (Alhagi persarum).

    Wildlife species:
    The area is also home to wildlife species such as leopard (Panthera pardus) jeeber gazelle (Gazella dorcas fuscifrons), wild sheep (Ovis vignei), wild goat (Capra aegagrus), leopard (Panthera pardus), wild cat (Felis silvestris), caracal (Felis caracal), jackal (Canis aureus), Pleske’s ground jay (Podoces pleskei), MacQueen’s bustard (Chlamydotis macqueenii), sand grouse (Pterocles sp.), kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), buzzard (Buteo sp.), see-see partridge (Ammoperdix griseogularis), sand boa (Eryx jaculus), desert horned viper (Cerastes gasperettii) and monitor lizard (Varanus griseus).

    Best time to visit: November to March

    Daily time visit: No limit, but in summer it is very hot.

    Difficulty level: Moderately easy, (night camping with no facilities)

    Requirements: Guide or GPS track, water, food, warm and waterproof clothes and tent, satellite phone, headlamp

    1- Go to Bayhaghi or south terminal of buses in Tehran
    2- Take a bus ticket to Yazd or Bafgh (Also can use train or airplane)
    3- Take a taxi to the site
