    Kalmand Protected Area



    Introduction: Having an area of over 229,100 ha, it was designated a Protected Area in 1990. Located in Yazd Province, its altitude ranges from 1,200 to 3,000m, with a mean annual temperature of 15°C and mean annual precipitation of 200mm, resulting in a temperate, extra-arid climate. The region is composed of desert, steppe and mountainous landscapes. A rearing center for the Persian wild ass or onager located there.

    Plant species:
    Vegetation includes wild pistachio (Pistacia atlantica), bean caper (Zygophyllum fabago), saxaul (Haloxylon sp.), tamarisk (Tamarisk sp.), fig (Ficus sp.), summer cypress (Kochia scoparia), oregano (Zataria multiflora), prickly thrift (Acantholimon sp.) and yarrow (Achillea sp.).


    Wildlife species:
    Wildlife includes MacQueen’s bustard (Chlamydotis macqueenii), goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa), wild goat (Capra aegagrus), Pleske’s ground jay (Podoces pleskei), Persian jird (Meriones persicus), jerboa (Jaculus sp.), caracal (Felis caracal), chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar), kite (Milvus sp.), buzzard (Buteo sp.), eagle (Aquila sp.), griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), falcon (Falco pelegrinoides), Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca), monitor lizard (Varanus griseus) and dwarf sand boa (Eryx miliaris).

    Daily time visit: No limit, but in summer it is very hot.

    Requirements: Guide or GPS track, water, food, warm and waterproof clothes and tent, satellite phone, headlamp

    1- Go to Bayhaghi or south terminal of buses in Tehran
    2- Take a bus ticket to Yazd (Also can use train or airplane)
    3- Take a taxi to the site
