    About history and architecture of Province

    Due to cultural and historical background there are various historical buildings and places in East Azarbaijan. There are about fifty old and historical mosques in this province. Kabood mosque is the most important mosques of East Azarbaijan.


    Mosques


    " Kaboud " Mosque - East Azarbaijan Province " Kaboud" Mosque or "Jahan
    Shah" Mosque is one of the historic structures in Tabriz city. According to its portal inscription it has been constructed by order of " Salehe Khanom"-Soltan Jahan Shah's daughter –in 1465(A.C.). Because of diverse tile-working and lines especially azure color of tile-working, it is called "Firouzeye Islam" (Islam turquoise).


    Tabriz Congregation Mosque - East Azarbaijan Province
    Tabriz Congregation Mosque is a historic structure in Tabriz which is called "Jame'a Kabir "- big congregation mosque- in historic books. This mosque has been repaired in Ilkhanid era and some parts have been added to it. High plastered Mehrab (altar) is a memorial of Ilkhanid era. After earthquake in Tabriz, some of its arches collapsed and later on, it was repaired.

    Islamic Religious Centers

    Imamzadeh Ma'soom- Maragheh
    Imamzadeh Ma'soom is located at 6 km. from the eastern south of Maragheh in a village. This tomb is a cave in the shape of Mithrai caves. Around it Quran verses have been carved. There is an old cemetery near this Imamzadeh with painted tomb stones.

    Worship centers of Minorities

    Holy Miriam Church
    Holy Miriam Church is located in northern "Shariati" street. Its structure has been made by stone and includes a large yard with several trees. The construction of the building started in 1782 and finished in 1785 (A.C.)

    Caravansaries

    Shah Abbasi Caravansary
    Shah Abbasi Caravansary is located at 12 km. from the west of Jolfa near Aras River. It is surrounded by Aras River in the north, tall mounts in the south, Jolfa Church in the west and Gendarmerie in the east. It is similar to other Safavi Caravansaries. Only western part of the caravansary has been remained

    Gardens & Edifices

    "Eil Goli" Edifice- Tabriz
    The former “Shah Goli” or the present “Eil Goli” is one of the recreational areas of Tabriz and Iran located to the north east of Tabriz. There is no information about date of construction, but it is said that the initial building related to Agh Qoyonloo period.
    It has been repaired in 1970A.C. to the former lines of architecture.


    "Rabae Rashidi" Edifice
    It is remnants of a large building which were built by efforts of "Rashidoddin Fazlollah" in Ilkhanid era. This place was a collegiate city. Nowadays only four legs of the edifice and earthwork, remains nothing of the edifice.

    "Shahr Dari"(Municipality) Palace- Tabriz
    This palace was built in the "Kooye Nobar" cemetery under the supervision of Germanic engineers. The building has a four square clock tower. Design of the building is like to Germanic buildings. Before the world war II. It is located in the downtown of Tabriz in famous clock square.

    "Behnam" House – Tabriz
    This house is located in "Maqsoodieh" region and "Bakhtar-e- Daftari" alley. This building is used as a place for collegiate studies. It is one of the ancient buildings of Qajar era which has been repaired when king" Nasser-Al- Din" was ruler. Main building is in north of the complex and has a balcony to the south.

    "Salmasi" House- Tabriz
    It is located in Tabriz, Imam Street, Salmasi alley, N.54. This house is used as a museum. Its space is 875 m². and belongs to Qajar era. It has been developed and completed by Salmasi family, one of the old family in Tabriz. Building has a portal with a spring house, reservoir, yard and garden. Main part of building is located in north side of the yard.
    Materials applied in the structure of the building are stone (in the foundation), stone and brick (in the walls of underground) and adobe with brick layer (in the walls of the upper stair).

    Mashrutiat (The Constitution) House – Tabriz
    It was a place for the constitutional revolutionary leaders gathering. Its founder was "Hajj Mehdi Kouzeh Kanani", one of the memberships of the constitution evolution. It has been registered in the national heritages lists because of their cultural and historical values.

    Livar jan - Mashhad
    Remainders of Livar jan Bath are located at 8 km. from the eastern south of Alamdar Township in Marand. It is related to Safavi and Qajar eras.

    Historical Bridges and Dams
    Stony Bridge
    Stony Bridge is located in a region with same name on Talkheh rood River. It is probably related to era. This bridge has four stony springs with a sigmoid arch.

    Schools

    Akbarieh School
    Akbarieh School is located in Tabriz City. It is related to Qajar era. This school has several rooms for students residency. This structure had an edifice that was constructed in the western and northern parts of Sahebol Amr Tomb in 1266(A.H.)

    Tombs
    Maqbaratol shoara (Poets)-Tabriz
    It is located to the east of the mausoleum of “Seyyed Hamzeh”. It is where poets and scholars in the field of literature, science and art are laid to rest.

    “Do Kamal” Tomb- Tabriz
    It is located in the “Bilan Kooh”. Two famous artist t” Kamal-o-din Behzad” And “Kamal-o-din Masood Khojandi” is laid to rest. “Khojandi” is one of the famous poets and” Behzad” is most famous painter in 10th century A.H.

    Qeys Tomb- TABRIZ
    Qeys was one of the Islam prophet’s followers. This tomb is located close to Tabriz-Azar shahr way.

    “Badamyar” cemetery
    It is located in the north of the “Qadamgah” village. It has inscriptions, stone carving and statue. The inscriptions are in “Koofi” and “Sols” calligraphy. The most famous inscriptions refer to “Khaje Ali” tomb.

    Spinach Cemetery
    Spinach is name of a village that is located near the “Osku” city. In its northern hills, there is an ancient cemetery. There are vertical and horizontal inscriptions on the tombs. Also there are several lions and ram statues, in the cemetery. Inscriptions show that some of the famous theosophists are laid to rest here. Tallest tomb belongs to a person whose name is “Mohammad Jalaloddin”.


    Bazaar

    Tabriz Bazaar Complex
    Tabriz Bazaar is one of the historical and beautiful bazaars in Iran and Middle East. Factors such as architecture of Bazaar, decoration of the shops, caravansaries, guilds, different business, school and mosques make it a unique Islamic Bazaar. Person such as"Yaqoot-e- Hamavi", "Ebn-e- Batouteh", "Hamdollahhe Mostowfi", "Marco Polo", "Sharden" adored this bazaar.

    "Amir" Bazaar – Tabriz
    It is one of the most important and beautiful bazaar of Tabriz. It contains bazaar and caravansaries which is a main center of carpet exports and textile, gold and jewelry bourse. It is crowded and is one of the tourism points. Date of construction is 1255A.H. nowadays commerce of the carpet and textile is replaced by gold and jewelry.

    Historical Inscriptions and Hills
    “Mosalla” Hill
    It is located in the northern beach of the Azar Shahr River. It known as “Do Daqi” or “Mosalla Daqi”. Surface of the hill is large and flat and is covered with inscription of tombs. The inscriptions belong to 7th and 8th century A.H.

    "Qarreh- Chiq" Hill
    In Banab-Qarreh Chiq way, there are three hills next together, inside the meadow of the " Qarreh Chiq' village. The biggest one has 5m. height. Many broken earthen wares belong to per historical era are discovered in the region.

    "Razliq" Inscription
    It has been carved on a rock of the "Zaqan" Mountain", and is located in the "Razliq" region. It belongs to Argishti II (730-685 B.C.), the son of Rosay I.

    "Imam Chai" Historical hill
    It is located in northeast of the" Imam Chai" village. During illegal excavations and exploitations, several Islamic tombs, different earthen wares belong to first millenary B.C. cinder and char related to a fire accident and a historical era, have been discovered.

    Citadel, Castle, Towers, Minarets


    "Barooj castle" Hillock
    It is located in "Barooj" village, where is 10 km. far from "Marand" city. Its height is 17km. and its thickness is 150 m. in the middle layers of the hillock, there are adobe walls. There is a dust layer around the hillock that shows a fire accident. In the upper layers, there are walls of brick which belong to Part era. Layers of hillock contain several civilization belong to Neolithic era. Earthen wares which belong to Islamic era are found inside the upper layers. The most ancient earthen wares date back to 5th millenary B.C.

    Arge Alishah(Alishah Citadel)
    Alishah School changed to silo and ammunition depots in Qajar era. It was called Arg(citadel) in this time. Its walls have been destroyed during wars and earthquakes.

    Historical Towns and Villages
    "Kandowan" Village – Tabriz
    It lies 62 km. and is located in the south of "Oskoo". It is close to a river which is called "Kandowan". Structure of the houses is rocky architect and dates back to 7th century A.H. Also some archaeologists believe that it dates back to pre-Islamic era. These houses resemble caves, being "dug out" in the mountains and therefore are reputed worldwide. Mineral water in this area is also used for treatment of disease. Mineral water, unique houses, green valleys, pleasure weather, dairy products and mountainous honey are factors which absorb many tourists every year.

    Historical Relics
    “Kabood” Dome- Maraqeh
    It is a tower with a decagonal building. It is said to be the tomb of Holakoo Khan’s mother, but Archaeologists believe that it belongs to Seljuk period and is built in 1172 A.C. inside the tower there is an inscription in Naskh calligraphy.

    “Gonbad-e- Sorkh” (red dome) - Maraqeh
    This ancient tomb is famous because of its beautiful architecture. It is known as “Qermezi Gonbad”.

    “Qaffarieh” Dome – Maraqeh
    It is one of the architectural masterpieces of the 8th century A.H. this building belongs to Aboo Saeed Bahador Khan’s period, the last Mongol Ilkhan. It is a rectangular building which is decorated with ornamental pillars.

    "Asiab Kharabeh" (Ruined Mill)
    It is one of the beautiful regions of the East Azarbaijan Province. It is called "Ruined Mill" because nowadays it is destroyed and people don’t can use it. In the resource of the spring, there are several Capri fig trees. There is a beautiful waterfall which flows to the valley. All of the walls of the valley are covered with alga. This landscape is very splendid and calmative. It has cold and pleasant weather.
